Played 15 years. Player/Manager who founded Delaware Valley (later
Alpha) and started the Tri-County League Hall of Fame. He was a first baseman
and also a pitcher, particularly during the early part of his career.
Among career leaders with 274 hits and 1022 at-bats, 138 RBIs over 15
seasons, with final average of .268. Best year was 1983 when he was
28 for 71, hitting .394. Also prided himself on his defense and
played in 9 All-Star games. He also took a team of mostly
Tri-County players to Cooperstown, NY for 14 consecutive years over Labor
Day weekend. In 1983, Delaware Valley was 19-8 and made the
playoffs. Long before there was a manager of the year award, he took
a team that was 4-23 in 1985 and turned it around, going 15-11 in 1986 and
advancing to the second round of the playoffs. He played briefly in
the LVMSBL before hanging up his spikes. Ciganick also coached the
Lehigh Valley Catz to a championship in their inaugural season in 2001. |
Prior to his Tri-County career, he was signed by the Boston Red Sox and played in the Gulf States League in Texas in 1976. He also worked out with the Reading Phillies prior to going to Texas, and with the Detroit Tigers Major League club in Spring Training. After Tri-County, he coached Salisbury Legion for 3 years, Saucon Valley High School JV's for 4 years, and Wilson Junior Legion for 3 years. From 1986 to 1999, he was a commissioned scout for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. During that time, over 60 players on which Ciganick reported were drafted by the Cardinals or other organizations. Six have played at the major league level. Beginning in 2000, he became an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. |
