Orioles have familiar look on the field

But new leadership from the bench.

Of The Morning Call

A year ago Quakertown wound up with the Tri-County Baseball League playoff title and there is every indication the team again will be a strong contender for top honors this summer.

Chip Friday has departed as field manager and Steve Bauder and Scott Davis have replaced him as co-managers. Other than that, the Orioles at this early stage of the season have a familiar look with all but one player having returned from last year's championship squad.

Bauder, 25, was on that squad last year as a catcher.

"With all our experience we should be all right provided we do not get too cocky," he said. "We should be solid all around . . . all 14 guys on the roster can be depended upon . . . obviously I am optimistic."

The pitching staff is formidable with Davis, Dennis Jones, Tom Hartman and Bob Drumbore. Davis and Drumbore are lefties. Bauder returns as catcher.

The first base duties are divided between Davis and Drumbore, depending on who who is pitching. The usual second baseman is Mark Butcher. At short is Bob Kile and at third is Mike Schaeffer with Kevin Kershner available for much duty.

The current starting outfield is made up of Terry Keller in left, Arky Colon in center and Rodney Rush in right.

The leading hitter a year ago was Drumbore, who was tops in the league with .448. Drumbore has played for the Quakertown Blazers after a good collegiate baseball career at Shippensburg University.

So how does the league look to Bauder?

"Solid," he said. "I think there will be more better teams this year and I am sure they will all be gunning for us because we are the defending champions."

As for Bauder, he is a former Quakertown High School player who holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from West Chester University. He is a credit analyst for Quakertown National Bank.

All of Quakertown's home games are played in Quakertown Memorial Park.

The Tri-County League regular schedule already is under way and will continue through July 24.

The annual all-star game is set for July 16 at Limeport, North versus South.

The championship series is set to start July 29 and the playoff title probably will be decided by Aug. 10.
