All-Star Game interrupts BML, Tri-Co title runs

Of The Morning Call

Action in the area's two adult amateur baseball leagues has moved past the halfway point.

Races in both the Blue Mountain and Tri-County Leagues, both for regular-season titles and playoff berths, are beginning to crystallize.

Before the battles are joined in earnest, both leagues will pause to take on each other in their annual midsummer all-star classic. This year's game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fegely Stadium in Limeport.

The BML has dominated the game in recent years -- but the 1999 game was an exception. Tri-County spotted the BML an early lead but rallied to pull out a win.

Proof that the teams mean business is in the rosters. Both teams are dominated by players coming from the teams fighting it out for first place.

Two BML clubs and five TCL teams are without representation.

Martins Creek, Banko's and the Lower Nazareth Phillies, who were running 1-2-3 in the BML following Monday's games, placed six players each on the all-star team. Fourth-place Bethleon, Limeport and the Yankees each have three representatives, three-time defending champion Catasauqua and Hellertown two each.

No team, though, is as heavily represented as the TCL's Tri-City Fleetwings. The 'Wings, currently in third place, a game behind defending champ Gabelsville and a half game behind Limeport, will send 12 to the classic.

The fourth-place ICC Pirates have six representatives, Limeport five and Gabelsville four. South Whitehall, Cetronia, Lehigh Township and the Northern Yankees will each send one.

The rosters:

TRI-COUNTY LEAGUE

Manager: Bob Fatzinger (Tri-City). Coaches: Mike Broscious, ICC; Ray Ganser, T-C; Marty Rowan, ICC; Mike Witkowski, T-C. P: Chad Arnold, L'port; Brian Gillow, ICC; Josh Gunkle, T-C; Dennis Kinney, T- C; Justin Konnick, Gabelsville; Matt Kuronya, South Whitehall; Brad Sechler, Cetronia; Scott Stewart, ICC; Pat Toner, L'port; Bruce Alpaugh, T-C. C: Jeremy Arner, T-C; Jared Nace, G'ville. 1B: Corey Schneck, ICC; Glenn Bubser, L'port; Matt Hlay, T-C.

LEAGUE RACES

BML: Martins Creek (16-5) and Banko's (14-4) appear ready to stage a match race for the best regular-season record, with the Creekers currently leading by a half game.

They are also the best bet to snag the two playoff byes that go to the 1-2 finishers (six teams qualify).

But they are, by no means, locks to do so. Two upstarts, Lower Nazareth (12-6) and Bethleon (13-7), are in a virtual tie for third. Both are within easy hailing distance (2 games) of the top if one or both of the two leaders falter in the second half.

If the season ended today, the Yankees (10-8) and Catty (12-10), in another virtual tie, would capture the two final playoff berths. Both, though, are only 1 games ahead of the Limeport Dodgers (10- 11), so a spirited three-way fight for the last two berths is likely.

TCL: A three-way race for the regular-season crown and the one playoff bye (seven teams qualify) between Gabelsville (17-3), Limeport (14-2) and Tri-City (15-4) seems likely, but ICC (14-6) is close enough (3 back) to make it a four-cornered battle.

Cetronia (12-7), Lehigh Township (10-7) and Stahley's (10-10) currently hold the last three playoff spots, but South Whitehall (9- 11) and Jordan Creek (8-10) are both close enough to get into the picture with one hot streak.
