Coplay puts itself in position to capture second straight title

Of The Morning Call

The third time has been the charm for the Coplay Reds in the Tri-County League Championship Series.

The third time up to bat, that is.

For the second straight game, the Reds scored five runs in the third inning on Sunday night at Gabelsville and used the three-hit pitching of Dan Fassl to blank the Owls 5-0 and take a 2-0 stranglehold in the best-of-five series.

Coplay (31-4-1) can clinch its second straight title in the amateur baseball league by winning Game 3, which starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Limeport.

The fact that the Reds have had back-to-back uprisings in the third is neither a coincidence nor is it anything new.

''It has been a pattern all year,'' said Coplay manager Steve Smull. ''We've had zero, zero in the first and second and then, boom, we put up big numbers in the third.''

The Reds adjust during their second time through the order and, after the first six batters were retired by the Owls' Justin Konnick Sunday, they exploded for six singles.

While an infield error made four of the five runs unearned, Caleb Calarco, Jeremy Faust, Brandon Leslie, Dan Borden and J.R. Graver all collected RBI singles.

''We feed off each other's hits and string them together,'' said Faust, a Parkland grad who was voted Tri-Co's rookie of the year after leading the league with a .456 average.

''Every time someone makes an out, we talk to each other about what we saw, what's he throwing, what are the angles, and we adjust.''

Konnick then adjusted to the Reds and allowed just one hit the rest of the way.

COPLAY'S DAN FASSL tossed a three-hitter, leading the Reds to a 5-0 win over the Owls in Game 2 of the best-of-five series in the Tri-County League Championship.
But the damage was done and Fassl and a slick-fielding Coplay defense made the five runs stick.

Fassl, a Bangor High and Arcadia University grad, walked three in the first two innings, but stranded four.

Given the 5-0 cushion when he went to the mound in the bottom of the third, Fassl was content to throw strikes and rely on his sterling defense.

The Reds were error free for the fifth straight playoff game and turned a pair of double plays, including one to end the game.

Fassl, who had just one strikeout, threw 55 pitches over the first three innings, but tossed just 18 over the next three.

''It's all about my defense,'' said Fassl, who worked a scoreless inning to get the save in Game 1 on Saturday. ''I just let them hit it and the defense just took over. They made no errors and you can't ask for more than that.''

''Our team is built on pitching and defense,'' Smull said. ''They made Dan work early and he was a little bit off. Then he just got dialed in. He keeps them off balance and knows how to get hitters out.''

In taming a Gabelsville lineup that had 13 hits on Saturday, Fassl allowed just three baserunners over the final five frames.

The game went fast, ending in an hour and 25 minutes.

Now, the Owls (27-9-2) hope they're not out of time.

''We had our chances and didn't take advantage of it and they made the most of their one opportunity,'' said Gabelsville player-manager Matt Danner. ''They hit the ball where we weren't in that one inning and we hit some balls hard that were right at them. ''[Fassl] threw strikes and they made some very nice plays defensively behind him. They're a solid team.

''But I wouldn't count us out yet.''

And, certainly the Reds aren't doing that, even though they posted one of the best regular season records in league history and are 5-0 so far in the postseason.

''Against Gabelsville, that last one will never come easy,'' Smull said. ''We've got to keep our nose to the grindstone, play them one at a time, and try to get one more.''

The rest of the series will be played under the lights at Limeport Stadium with RCN Cable providing Game 3 coverage. Games 4 and 5 would be played Wednesday and Thursday nights, if necessary.
