Gabelsville holds off Yankees
Matt Melcher strikes out 8 and Kyle
Brobst saves a 5-4 win.
GABELSVILLE -- Gabelsville got by the visiting
Northern Yankees 5-4 behind 8 strikeouts by Matt Melcher. The righty struck out
the side in his first two innings of work. The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first
inning after they loaded the bases on three straight walks by Matt Goldman. Greg
Gilbert scored on a wild pitch that went through the legs of batter Bob Graber.
The Yankees tied it up in the 3rd on an RBI single by
Jeremy Smith that went under the glove of a diving Dave Pence. Gabelsville
retook the lead in the 4th when Bob Graber broke up Goldman's no hitter with a
bloop single, then scored when Jared Trout hit Goldman with a chopper back to
the mound. The Yankees were quick to strike back, scoring two runs in the 5th.
Jeremy Smith picked up his second RBI of the game with an infield hit to Rodney
Miller. Smith then stole second, but catcher Drew Hoffman's throw was wild,
allowing Brian Buchman to score and giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead.
Gabelsville took the lead for good in the bottom half of
the inning on Matt Danner's two-run single to left. The Owls then added an
insurance run in the 6th, which would prove to be the game winner because the
Yankees scored once more in the 7th off reliever Kyle Brobst. Brobst still
managed to save the game for Melcher, getting pinch hitter George Hutson to fly
out to center, then Jeremy Smith was doubled up returning to first base. With
the win Gabelsville improves to 3-0. The Yankees fall to 0-4.
