ICC outlasts Pioneers, 8-4

Corey Schneck goes 3-for-5 to lead 13-hit attack for the Pirates.

MILFORD SQUARE -- A night after handing the Gabelsville Owls their first loss of the season, the ICC Pirates stayed hot, beating the Milford Pioneers 8-4 behind three hits from Cory Schneck and solid pitching from Ryan Lindley and Eric Baran. They combined to scatter seven hits in seven innings while striking out seven and walking two.

ICC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Eric Ruff doubled to drive in Josh Mohlmann, then scored when the right fielder dropped Dave Stauffer's fly ball, the first of a combined nine errors in the game.

Milford took one run back when Brian Kucharik singled in the bottom of the first and scored on an error when Ron Hack's grounder was bobbled and thrown away at second base, allowing Kucharik to score.

The Pirates opened their lead to 5-1 in the second inning. Dan Fazakas singled, stole second, and came home after Pioneer's starter Jerry Kresge's pickoff throw went into center field. Len Melton and Mohlmann followed with singles, then Kyle Ruff ripped a 2-run double into left-center.

The Pioneers fought back for one more run in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Clark reached on a 2-base error and scored on Justin Holman's RBI single.

ICC got that run back in the third when Schneck singled and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Then things got even worse for Kresge in the bottom of the third. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, he was coming around third base on Raymond Sia's single. Right fielder Dave Stauffer's throw was in time, and Kresge injured his knee on the play and is lost to the Pioneers for the season. He was relieved by Chris Clemmer, who held the Pirates to just two more runs in four innings while striking out three.

One of those runs came in the 5th inning when pinch hitter Todd Brosious doubled and scored on a passed ball. Pinch hitter A.J. Peracchia struck out but reached first base on one of the passed balls.

Milford scored two runs in the bottom of the 5th, the first on a double steal. Mark Jones followed Kucharik's second hit of the game with another single, and then Kucharik swiped home as Jones took second. Jones scored on Ron Hack's sacrifice fly. The grizzled veteran continues his drive for 200 career RBI's.

ICC put the game away in the 7th inning with consecutive hits by Kyle Ruff, Stauffer and Schneck, whose single drove in Ruff for the 8th and final Pirate run. Stauffer and Ruff each finished with two hits. Mohlmann scored two runs and Kyle Ruff drove in two. Winning pitcher Ryan Lindley runs his record to 1-1.

For Milford, Kucharik and Jones each had two hits, and Kucharik scored twice. Kresge took the loss and will finish his season 0-3. The Pioneers are 2-9 with the loss and next play a doubleheader against the Northern Yankees at home. ICC ups its record to 9-4 and will play host to the Tri-City Fleetwings on Thursday.
